About

Sylvia Netzer (b. 1944, New York City; lives and works in New York City) is a sculptor known for large-scale ceramic installations and the use of encaustic (pigmented wax) to create richly layered, sensuous surfaces. Her work explores body morphology and gender identity through a range of materials, from densely carved brick to delicate casting slip.

Netzer received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Columbia University School of the Arts and is the Director of the Ceramics Program at The City College of New York. In addition to her studio practice, she is an art critic and curator whose writing on ceramics and glass has appeared in leading publications including SculptureNeues GlasGlassAmerican Ceramics, and The New Art Examiner. Her work has been featured in numerous books on contemporary ceramics and encaustic painting.

Netzer has curated exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery, Gallery 128, and other venues. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally, including in Sweden and Japan, and is held in several permanent collections.
